ALASKA STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEET West Valley Boys, Chugiak Girls Claim D1 Team Titles By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Daniel Abramowicz of West Valley won his fifth straight 5,000-meter race of the cross country season and led his team to an Alaska Division 1 team title in rainy conditions on Saturday at Barlett High School. Abramowicz ran 16:12.0 to win the state finals race by 17 seconds. West Valley, of Fairbanks, put four in the top 20 and held on to win a tight team battle with West Anchorage (82) and Service (89). Fifth runner Nicholas Buth and sixth runner Ezra Bailey came in together, 40th and 41st, to seal the win. The meet returned much more to normal after the 2020 championships were held with pared down fields and no team awards. ' The Chugiak girls scored 42 points, led by Campbell Peterson's second-place finish. Chugiak's five scorers all finished in the top 15. Robyn Miller of South Anchorage won the Division 1 race in 19:10.6. Grace Christian dominated the action in the Division 2 races. The boys put four in the top five, including winner David Sliwinski (16:44.9) and five in the top eight, and scored 20 points for the team title. The girls put four in the top 10 and scored 29 points. Jayna Boonstra of Kenai Central, the alma mater of Allie Ostrander, won the Division 2 girls race in 19:47.0. In Division 3, Haines got the team sweep. Freshman Ariel Godinez-Long won the girls race by almost a minute in 20:31.1. Grace Long, a junior, was fifth. Uriah Lucas of Petersburg won the boys Division 3 race in 17:38.7. Haines had three runners in the top eight, led by Leo Wald, who was second.
