Haines Makes 750-Mile Journey To Small-School Title Sweep

By Mary Albl of DyeStat

The road to a state title for the Haines High Glacier Bears cross country team was a long but historic journey. According to reports from the Anchorage Daily News, it took Haines two vans, one bus, and two days, spanning 750 miles to make it to Bartlett Trails in Anchorage, the site of the Alaska State Cross Country Championships.

The trip was well worth it. Racing in Alaska's new Division III classification, Haines swept both titles and took individual honors in the boys and girls races on Saturday.

“We left on Thursday at 9 and we stopped at Hidden Lakes and did a 2-mile run,” sophomore Avery Williamson told the Daily News. “We spent the night in Tok and we all ate junk food at Fast Eddy’s.”

Williamson was the first girl to cross the line on the 5,000-meter course in a time of 21:08. The top boy was Haines senior Siyel George in 16:59.1.

The fastest times of the day, however, were produced in the Division I race. West Valley senior Kendall Kramer won her third consecutive title in 17:38.5. Kramer's time at Bartlett is the second fastest to Kenai Central graduate Allie Ostrander, who now is a professional runner for Brooks. Sadie Tuckwood of Juneau finished second behind Kramer for the second year in a row.

In the boys Division I race, Dimond senior Santiago Prosser led his team to a second straight crown. His time was the fastest of the day (15:14.4).

In the Division II race, the Grace Christian boys team repeated as team champions, with Anchorage Christian junior Tristian Merchant winning in 15:27.9. The Grace Christian girls also claimed the team title, as Homer senior Autumn Daigle won in 19:32.3.

Team Champions - RESULTS

DI: Dimond boys, 36 points; South Anchorage girls, 53 points
DII: Grace Christian boys 32 points; Grace Christian girls 42 points
DIII: Haines boys 32 points; Haines girls 28 points
